Recent Work - 23 New Paintings to Show You!

Happy Spring 2011 - at least that's what the calendar says - right now it's very chilly on Cape Cod! But the sun is shining - I feel like a cat, looking for the sunniest window! With the help of Monja at Spicy Design, we've uploaded 23 new paintings onto the website. They're in a "gallery" folder of their own., on the "Gallery" pages. There's alot of variety in this mix - pastels, oils and even a few watercolors. Subject matter varies widely, too. There are Cape Cod land and seascapes; A Grenada seascape series, called Webcam Daydreams, inspired by the webcams at www.grenadaexplorer.com; a surfer series, entitled Facing the Waves - about courage in the face of huge uncertainty; some "wraparound" oils, painted on 3 surfaces; birds, beasts and more... I'll be participating in a number of shows this May, details are on the "Exhibitions" page. One May 2011 show I missed mentioning there will be the Wellfleet Painters Show of Recent Work, which will hang through the month of May at the Wellfleet COA. The Wellfleet Painters get together on Friday afternoons at the COA to work on individual projects. When it warms up a bit, we'll be going outside. This will be a show (our second) of work we've produced while painting together. Bob and I enjoyed a trip to the Savannah area recently. What a great place to visit - it was Spring there, months ahead of us! In addition to visiting the "Historic District", we got a chance to get out into "the swamp" and visit the seashore, as well. I've already got 2 pastels in the "work-in-progress" stage, based on photos taken there. Also got some good photos of migrating birds, who may be seen flying into future paintings. The Sandpiper Gallery, which showed my paintings for many years here in Wellfleet, has closed. I was glad to have the opportunity to show my work there, and I wish Mary Houk the best with her new-found free time. In May, I expect to be employed again at beautiful Truro Vineyards. This year, I'll have an even sharper eye out for the many painting possiblities there. Til then, I'm trying to paint some every day, and be mindful of the beauty all around me....

Hello to all. It's been a busy summer, and I've not updated my "blog" in a while so here goes...

I've been spending the Spring-Summer-Fall season working at Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod. It's been such a pleasure to watch the grapes grow and ripen around me! I know these images of adundance will work their way into paintings, hopefully this winter.

Painting time has been hard to come by, but things are easing up and I've been working on a few pieces. I participated in two shows this summer, one with the Visual Artists Cooperative, a showing of "New Works" that hung at the Orleans (Ma.) library for the month of August; and in September I was part of a group of plein air artists that hung a show entitled "Rose Farm" at the Truro COA. Two more show with the VAC are coming up in November.

Cape Cod is in it's most beautiful season right now, and there is inspiration everywhere I look!
I'm hoping to get out and work en plein air a few more times before it gets too cold and blustery.

Thinking, as always, about Grenada and hoping to sell some Grenada paintings to help finance a trip there. I look daily at the webcams on the Grenada Explorer website www.grenadaexplorer.com
and am very inspired by them, but I long for the day when I will walk the beach at La Sagesse again!

New Paintings! Website Changes, and More...

With the assistance of web-designer Monja Winsborrow at Spicy Design, I've added 20 new paintings to my website.
These paintings depict quite a variety of subject matter and media. In addition to a fairly steady flow of pastel paintings, I had time this winter to do alot more oil painting, and have had fun this spring with watercolors!
We separated all of the website paintings into "galleries", based on geographic location of the land & seascapes. There is also an "Eclectic" gallery for other subjects.
And we added a "Links" button to connect you with some favorite websites...let me know if you'd like to "exchange links".

I've had the opportunity to get outside to paint several times in the past couple of weeks. Several of us are gathering at Rose Farm in Wellfleet on Friday mornings, to paint at this lovely old Cape Cod farmstead. In addition to the farm buildings and Cape house, the property has beautiful plantings and gardens, which have been lovingly tended by artist-in-residence Katy and the late David Rose.
David, who passed away this past October, was a gifted wood-worker and all-around creative guy, whose unique touches are everywhere at the farm.
We are amassing a nice body of work, and intend to have a "Rose Farm" show, possibly this Fall.

I am once again showing other new work in oil and pastel at Sandpiper Gallery, Wellfleet this season; and also showing pastels at Van Rensellaer's Restaurant in South Wellfleet.

Art Auction to Benefit Haiti This Sat. Night.

Truro Center For the Arts (also Know as Castle Hill) will be holding a Silent Auction to benefit earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, this Saturday night from 7-10 pm, at the Castle Hill Barn on Meeting House Rd. in Truro, MA.
The event will also be a "Red Party" - attendees are encouraged but not required to wear red. There will be music for dancing, hosted by D.J. Matty Dread.

I've donated a painting from my Grenada group, entitled "Rain For The Young Palms", which can be seen in the "Gallery" section of this website. When I went to Grenada in 2004, just 10 weeks after devastating Hurricane Ivan, I was very moved by the bravery, resiliance and optimism is saw in the Grenadian people. Like the people, even the coconuts were beginning to root, thrive and grow. The painting is a metaphor for peoples' courage and hopes for the future.

I hope the Auction is a great success!

Just Added - 5 New Grenada Paintings! - and a November Show

It's been a while since I've been to Grenada - but I've sure been thinking
about that beautiful island. When I'm there I shoot alot of photographs, and when I'm home, those images "percolate" in my mind. A particular image can begin to take on
a special or symbolic meaning to me.
When that happens, often a painting is born!

The new paintings, all pastels, can be found on my website
by clicking the "Gallery" or "Details" button.
They are titled as follows:
Rainforest Resident, Cows at The River, Village of St. David's,
River Change Course, and Hopes Aloft.

Tomorrow I will be hanging a show entitled "Here and There - Pastel Paintings of Cape Cod and Grenada". It will be up for the month of November at THe Wellfleet Senior Center, Old King's Highway, Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The will be no opening reception, but you are welcome to stop by the Senior Center Monday through Friday to view them.

Paintings Showing at Bank through September

This morning I will be hanging a series of five paintings at the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, at 345 Main Street, Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The show, which is entitled "Salt Marshes in Autumn" will be on display in the lobby, through the month of September. Although there is not a lot of room for a large display, it is perfect for a themed show. The paintings I have chosen(all pastels) are all on the website, with the exception of one. They are: "Misty Morning Heron", "High Head #2", "High Head #3","In the Provincelands", and "November Marsh". If you are in downtown Wellfleet, please stop by and check it out!

Auction & Reception to Benefit Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod

This Sunday, August 9th, 3:00 to 7:00 pm, will be the 8th Annual Sandpiper Gallery Reception and Auction to benefit Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod. The event will be held at Sweet Seasons, 70 Main Street, Wellfleet - at the Inn at Duck Creeke. Parking is free at Town Pier, and continuous free shuttle service will be provided between the Pier and Sweet Seasons.
There'll be wine and elegant nibbles plus music by Big Jazz! suggested donation is $10.00.

I'm donating two paintings this year - "Fireflies in Lavender" and "Leaving Santa Fe", both of which can be seen here on the website. My choice of "Leaving Santa Fe" is in memory of the late Phyllis Fram, who passed away last month. Phyllis was the mother of my oldest friend, Laura Fram Cowan, of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Art In Flower at Sandpiper Gallery

Today, Saturday, July 18 I will be joining two other artists at the Sandpiper Gallery at 2:00 pm to paint flower arrangements created by Sunny, of St. Aubin's Flowers in Eastham.

The Art & Alzheimer's Project

Today I had the opportunity to speak about my art work with people with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. The event was created by Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, and was sponsored in part by the Wellfleet Cultural Council. We met at Sandpiper Gallery for about an hour and a half. Susanne Faith facilitated the discussion. I showed several paintings, and we spoke about each of them in turn. We discussed the subject matter, the seasons and scenes depicted. We tslked about possible titles for the paintings. I spoke about pastels as a painting medium, and compared the different papers and types of pastels. They were a totally responsive group and had many observant comments. I had an absolutely inspiring time, and it was an honor to share my work with them!

V.A. C. Shows " Summer's Tapestry"

The Visual Artists' Cooperative has mounted a multi-media show at the Brewster Ladies' Library, 1822 Main Street, in Brewster Massachusetts, entitled "Summer's Tapestry".
Each artist in our group was asked to show 3 or 4 works.
The paintings I have on display at this show are: "Paddle-Out", "Newcomb Hollow Cliffs", both images that can be viewed on the website; and "Swans' Nocturne" which is better seen than photographed!
"Summer's Tapestry" will hang through June 23rd.

Two More Art & Wine Wednesdays at VR's

Last Wednesday evening I was part of a group of three artists who spoke about their work at a wine and art soiree.

I brought some paintings with me, and there were several of my displayed pieces hanging on the walls. I spoke about my interest in painting the place where the land meets the sea, whether it be on Cape Cod, in Grenada or Ireland. I also spoke about what helps keep my creative flame alight.Having friends who I can discuss my process with is very important to me. And, of course - selling a painting sends me right to the easel!

Other artists featured were Rowena Perkins of Wellfleet, who discussed her art backround, and her current use of the acrylic medium. You can check out Rowena's lively paintings at: www.rowenaperkins.com
Mary Kay Wentzel, a member of the Eastham Painters Group, who paints in watercolor and pastel, also spoke about her art experiences.

There was a wine and champagne tasting, and lots of appetizers.
It was great time, and I was glad to see lots of familiar faces as well as meet some nice new aquaintances.

The next Art & Wine reception will be May 13th, from 5:30-7 pm. Five artists will be featured, including my friends Katy Rose and Aline Gagne.

"Yellow" Show at PAAM

Today was the painting drop-off day for the first Members Open Exhibit at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It's been a dark showery day, but walking into the light-filled room, which was filled with a brilliant array of artwork in all hues of yellow,made the day seem filled with sunshine! I' m entering a painting called "Late Sunday, La Sagesse", which can be seen on the website. It's a rather mysterious painting that shows the golden light of late afternoon at La Sagesse Bay, Grenada, as well as figures on the beach.

There will be a reception for the "Yellow" Show this Friday at Provincetown Art Association and Museum, from 6-8 pm. The paintings will hang through late May.

If you've got time and an interest in historic art of Provincetown and the Outer Cape, take a look at PAAM's past auctions. You can click on to paintings listed by artist's name and title. It also shows the winning bid. I feel that I've learned alot about 20th century artists who's names I've known, but was unfamiliar with their work. It's also an interesting chronicle of "old" Cape Cod.

Art and Wine Wednesdays at V.R.'s

VanRensselaer's Restaurant & Raw Bar is hosting a series of Art and Wine Wednesdays from 5:30-7 pm, on April 29th, May 13th and May 27th. Different local artists who show their paintings at V.R.'s will be speaking briefly about their work. There will also be wines from around the world, and of course, wonderful nibbles featured each week.
I'm looking forward to being part of the first event on April 29th.
Van Rensellear's is located across from the Cape Cod National Seashore's Marconi Beach entrance,1019 Route 6, South Wellfleet.

"The Season" Approaches

Here on Cape Cod, it's still cold and windy, but we year-rounders are busy getting ready for our summer tourism season. When I say "Summer", ideally we hope for a season that begins in Spring - many shops and businesses will re-open around Easter, then more in Early May. By Memorial Day Weekend, everyone is pretty much ready to rock & roll 'til Columbus Day Weekend - or Wellfleet OysterFest, our last hurrah here in the 'Fleet.
I'm sorting through my framed paintings, and getting new work framed for The Sandpiper Gallery in Wellfleet, which will open on Mother's Day Weekend. I also will select a group of seascapes and still lifes to show at Van Rensaellear's Restaurant. They'll open for Easter Weekend.
This year, I'm also pulling out a few to display with The Visual Artists Cooperative. This show will be at the Chatham Creative Arts Center, 154 Crowell Road, Chatham. The show is entitled "In Living Color" and will be up from April 4-24, 2009. There will be an opening reception Saturday, April 4th, from 4-6 pm. I am a new member of the Visual Artists Cooperative, and am looking forward to meeting and showing with this accomplished group of Outer Cape artists.

Irish Eyes

We've just added a bunch of paintings featuring scenes of Ireland. most are pastels, but several are watercolors. The Irish landscape, sea and sky scape begs to be painted in all media, but watercolor really expresses the rapidly changing skies, and frequent mists.

My husband Bob and I have been to Ireland several times, and have stayed at many wonderful Bed & Breakfasts . Bob has bravely taken the wheel of a rental car, and we've done alot of exploring, particularly in Cork and Clare. We're very interested in megalithic historic sites, and have traveled many a byway in search of these ancient stone circles, monuments and forts.
I have two watercolors,"Drombeg Stone Circle" and "Poulnabroune Dolmen" that depict these mysterious places. If you are interested in this sort of thing, I found an excellent website,
http://www.megalithomania.com that has very complete information on most Irish sites.

Welcome to my new website and first-ever blog!The website will feature my paintings of Grenada, Ireland, Cape Cod, as well as the occasional still life, sketch or photo. Right now, though, what you will see is my current gallery of Grenadian subject matter, as my first goal with this site is to share this segment of my work with the wider audience that can be accessed by the world-wide web. In the next few weeks, I will be showing my other subjects, as well.I am new to blogging, but as I am not usually at a loss for words, I hope to make good use of this way to communicate. In the near future, I hope to be discussing my artistic path, Grenada, Ireland, Cape Cod, life and creativity, and other musings.
